BOXING Day hero Leigh Downing is targeting a top half finish for Tividale following the 3-1 victory at table topping Sutton Coldfield Town.

Downing returned to the side after being an unused substitute in the defeat against Gresley and repaid Ian Long’s faith by bagging a second half brace to bring home three points to the Black Country.

And Tivi, who moved up one place to 14th in the Evo-Stik Northern League Division One South have games in hand on the six clubs directly above them in the table and Downing believes it’s an opportunity for Ian Long’s side to take advantage.

He said “It was a fantastic win at Sutton, but one I felt we truly deserved on the day.

“The gaffer wasn’t pleased with our performance against Gresley and he had every reason to be upset.

“We’ve got games in hand on the clubs above us in the table and we need to make the best of those and pick up as many points as possible.”

Forward Downing, 26, hopes his two goals on Boxing Day will see him start against former employers Chasetown on New Years Day after the postponement of Sunday’s home fixture with Lincoln United.

“It will be nice to play against Chasetown.

“I had some good times there but I’m a Tividale player now and it’s a big game for us.

“I was really hoping the game with Lincoln was on but the weather has been particularly bad over the past week and the game had to be called off as a result of that.

“But, all being well the game will be able to go ahead on Thursday – we need the three points and hopefully I can get on the scoresheet again.”
