SHAQUILLE Leachman-Whittingham hopes for more minutes on the field tonight against Goole AFC after making an impressive appearance from the bench for ‘Dale in the latter stages of Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Rainworth Miners Welfare at The Beeches.

Leachman-Whittingham replaced Chris Field as Tivi pushed for an equaliser and it was his cross that eventually found it’s way to David Bellis, who’s shot deflected off team mate Sam Williams into the back of the Rainworth net.

And the 17 year old Tividale Academy graduate was pleased with the impact he made in the closing minutes of the game.

He said “It was great to get on the field, first and foremost. We were not at our best and the manager asked me to play out wide and try to cause the Rainworth backline some problems.

“Me and Jamie (King) came on and I think we did well. It’s not easy, we’re both very young and credit to the manager for showing faith in the pair of us. My confidence levels are high and I know I can play at this level of football on a regular basis.

“We had a few players missing. Ryan (Winwood) and Mitchell (Botfield) were unavailable. Danny Ashton and Nigel Penney were ill so it gave me an opportunity. They are all good, experienced players and I had to take my opportunity – thankfully I did just that.”

But Leachman-Whittingham says he will keep his feet firmly on the ground and keep working hard in training sessions to continue his development as a first team player.

He added “Me and Desean (Martin) came through the academy here and we fully appreciate the opportunities we have been given so far this season with the first team squad. You learn from the senior players, even just by watching and listening to them. I still have a lot to learn but time is on my side.”
