Tividale find their cutting edge against Steels
Tividale produced the form that had been lacking over the last few weeks with a performance described as organised, controlled and determined.
Tividale were on the front foot from the off and created the first real chance of the game after 13 minutes when striker Karl Edwards burst through on goal but could only shoot wide under pressure from his marker. Tividale dictated all departments of the game in the early stages and on 22 minutes they took the lead when a cross into the Stocksbridge penalty area from Nigel Penney was met by Leigh Downing and his shot from 10 yards out looked to take a deflection off Stocksbridge defender Rory Coleman and it completely wrong footed keeper Peter Denton.
Tividales first goal scored by Leigh Downing
Tividale continued to dominate the half and on 38 minutes should have been a deservedly further ahead when a Edwards header from a Zach Foster corner was cleared off the line by Coleman with Denton beaten. 4 minutes later Edwards was again thwarted this time his shot on the turn from a half cleared free kick was deflected over the bar by defender Liam McFadyen.
Half Time Tividale FC 1-0 Stocksbridge Park Steels FC
Whatever was said in the Stocksbridge dressing room at half time certainly did the trick as they were a completely different side in the early stages of the second half and put the home defence under their first bit of pressure of the game and 9 minutes into the half they were on level terms. The goal itself came from an innocuous free kick 20 yards out from Coleman. The ball looked to be well covered by Tividale keeper Charlie Price but somehow just as he was about to catch the ball it somehow evaded him and it ended up in the back of his net.
The goal was just reward for the visitors start to the second half and Stocksbridge striker Danny Critchlow may feel he should have done better with a goal ward bound shot that was blocked by Tividale defender Luke Paskin. This after his strike partner Brad Grayson had forced Price into a save after a great run and shot from down the left flank.
The game now became a more even affair with both sides trying to outwit each other and you felt that whoever got the next goal would win it and on 68 minutes the goal came. Tividale substitute Ryan Winwood took on his man down the right wing, played the ball into fellow sub Jordan Archer who swept the ball out to Downing on the left side of the penalty area and he fired past Denton.
Tividale then showed those three facets mentioned earlier to their game as they managed the rest of the game with just the one serious threat to their goal. That was when a Harrison Biggins free kick from the edge of the Tividale box came back off Price’s right upright and away to safety. Tividale’s Archer did have one last chance to extend the lead when after he was played in by Andy Parsons but he could not find the target with his shot.
