Tividale FC 1-0 Kidsgrove Athletic FC
Tividale Ted’s team help secure the points.
In their first home game since New Years Day Tividale battled their way to victory over a Kidsgrove Athletic side that had shown an upturn in their recent form.
But for a herculean effort from a group of volunteers this game would not have happened. Grounds man Ted Wood had got the pitch absolutely perfect by Friday morning but 24 hours of constant and at times torrential rain left a third of the Beeches pitch underwater at 8 am on Saturday morning.
So after a few text messages Ted was joined by a group of volunteers who worked for 5 hours solid to clear the water and make the pitch playable. So the game itself was never going to be a classic due to the pitch being very heavy in that middle third.
Tividale should have gone ahead after 9 minutes when Jordan Archer surged into the Kidsgrove box and was upended by Kidsgrove’s Dave McPherson. Zach Foster stepped up to take the spot kick but to the amazement of everyone involved with the home side he dragged the ball wide of the right hand post. The let off set Kidsgrove off on a bout of possession that they would feel should have had at least one entry into the goals column as on 13 minutes from a Matthew Bell corner defender Wayne Johnson rose unmarked but could only head over. Then 6 minutes later Steve Brannan raced into the box, his shot was deflected off Foster but some how Tividale keeper Charlie Price after being wrong footed by the deflection was just able to swivel his body and palm the effort over the bar. From the resulting corner Kidsgrove Andy Kinsey’s header was cleared by Andy Parsons.
Apart from a Dave Bellis shot that Kidsgrove keeper Joe Hemmings saved comfortably The rest of the half was void of any clear cut chances as it became a battle in the middle of the park as both teams struggled to put any decent amount of possession together on the heavy pitch.
Half Time:- Tividale FC 0-0 Kidsgrove Athletic FC
Kinsey had the first effort on target in the second half on 57 minutes but Price saved his shot low down. Tividale’s skipper Richard Huckfield then headed over a Foster corner on the hour. On 71 minutes Bell then saw his effort clear Price’s crossbar.
5 minutes later Tividale were in front when Archer controlled a long ball rounded his marker Ryan Brown and his cross found Danny Ashton who had ghosted past Johnson to the back post and volleyed home. On 83 minutes Huckfield met another Foster corner but this time his header went wide. Tividale should have added a second on 85 minutes when the impressive Archer outran Johnson but his shot went agonisingly wide of Hemmings far post.
Tividale saw out the rest of the game and collected the three points. Helped in no small way by Ted Wood and his band of volunteers Mark and Caz Wells, Charlie Goodman, John Cotton, Dave Simons, Ian Long and Rich Colwell
