Tividale win 5-4 on penalties
Tividale pen’s halt Roman march
Tividale will play either Bolehall Swifts or Chasetown in the Semi-Final of the Walsall Senior Cup after overcoming a spirited Romulus side on penalties on their 3G pitch at Coles Lane.
After a string of games on heavy pitches Tividale struggled to get to grips with the home sides slick passing on the artificial surface and they had the best of the first half. The first chance on goal fell to Romulus forward Jed Davies but his effort was comfortably saved by Paul Evans making his debut in the Tividale goal. Tividale did come even closer on 22 minutes when from a free kick on the edge of the box Zach Foster hit the crossbar. But it was Romulus who were doing the majority of the running and the tricky Edwin Akenkorah just failed to latch onto a long ball on 30 minutes as Evans was alert and quick off his line to collect the ball. 6 minutes later an Ahenkorah shot come cross flashed across the face of the Tividale goal just evading his strike partner Davies.

Tividale came out determined to stamp their authority on the game and on 47 minutes striker Jordan Archer sprinted clear down right flank before unleashing a shot that was well saved by Romulus keeper Stuart Parsons with his feet. On 56 minutes a cross from former Tividale player Ashley Jackson was headed over by Davies.
On the hour the visitors made a couple of changes bringing on Danny Ashton and Nigel Penney for Ryan Winwood and Mitchell Botfield.
With Ashton going into the right back role and pushing Chris Field into the middle of the park while Penney played wide right. The move was the swing in momentum that Tividale needed as Field immediately started to break up the play and taking the Romulus midfield out of their comfort zone. The game was now getting stretched and Jackson had a shot well wide and then Davies forced Evans into a save. At the other end Field found Penney with a great pass on 64 minutes but his cross was hacked clear.
Ahenkorah then was allowed to run at the Tividale defence but his brilliant curling shot at the end of it came back of the crossbar with Evans beaten. Right on the stroke of full time Archer brought down a through ball beautifully but dragged his shot wide

As the game moved into extra time Tividale’s Field was now the holding player in the middle of the park while Leigh Downing was playing a more advanced role and it was his clever through ball that put Romulus defender Liam Francis under pressure but Karl Edwards failed to cash in. Then Downing played in Archer and his turn and volley was well saved by Parsons. Downing had the last and possibly the best chance of extra time when he raced through a tired Romulus defence but instead of shooting tried to play it square to Archer and the Romulus defence scrambled clear

And so the game went into the dreaded penalties with Romulus’s Luke Keen scoring the first, Downing made it 1-1. Mark Branch put Romulus 2-1 up but Edwards made it 2-2. Greg Downes scored to make it 3-2 and Danny Ashton levelled it up at 3-3. Barry Fitzharris then blazed his effort over the bar and Andy Parsons put Tividale in the driving seat scoring to make it 3-4. with one penalty each to come the impressive Ahenkorah had to score to keep Romulus in the game and he made no mistake 4-4. So it was down to Dave Bellis to see Tividale through but he dragged his effort wide of the post 4-4. Now its sudden death. Jackson stepped up and he also blazed over and now Tividale were again a penalty away from going through. This time Penney made no mistake 4-5 and Tividale go through
