Tividale FC 2-2 Westfields FC
Down but still defiant
In a season that has been a sharp learning curve for this Tividale squad resulting in relegation. No one can doubt that they are finishing the season in the right manner the way boss Dave King asked for.
It was the visitors who started the better as Tividale struggled to get a foothold into the game and in the very first minute Westfields had a tremendous chance when a bit of indecision between young keeper Lewis Handley and defender Matt Preston allowed Chris Ham a shot at the back post but Handley got down well to block his shot.
Tividale began to get their act together and eased into the game and in the 12th minute they were ahead when skipper Craig Stevens played a defence splitting pass to Chris Bladen who ran onto it and fired past an exposed Kieron Blackburn in the Westfields goal.
After taking the lead Tividale had to endure the ensuing onslaught led by the impressive Sirdic Grant who had a free role across the Westfields front line. Their best chance in this spell was created by Grant when he did well to get to the by line then cut the ball back for Craig Jones but he hit his shot wide.
Westfields were inevitably punished for not making the most of their pressure and were punished on 39 minutes when the visitors gave away a foul on the edge of their box and Elliott Hartley placed the ball and curled his free kick over the Westfields wall and into the back of the net with Blackburn rooted to the spot.
Westfields finished the half with the upper hand and Handley had to make a smart save from a header after a Westfields corner right on the stroke of half time.
Half Time:-Tividale FC 2-0 Westfields FC.
The first goal after the break was always going to be an important one and you felt that if Tividale conceded then it would set off the panic stations and it was Tividale that conceded just 2 minute in. When Westfields substitute Alex Hainault fired home after Tividale failed to clear their lines. Tividale should have regained their two goal lead a minute later when Nathan Jones played in Bladen but this time Blackburn was able to block his shot. On 56 minutes Westfields had a great chance to equalise when Ben Hayes shot wide when well placed. Then on 66 minutes Hayes again failed to find the target after the Tividale defence switched off prior to a quick Westfields throw.
Tividale were holding on by their fingertips at times as they defended superbly and possibly had the best chance with just 8 minutes to go to finish off the visitors when first substitute Harvey Walker’s shot was blocked and the rebound fell to fellow sub Daniel Doyle and his shot was brilliantly palmed over from point blank from Blackburn.
Just as it looked as though Tividale would get all the points on offer, came the you just knew it moment. With a minute to go a long punt up field from Blackburn found Aidan Thomas and his shot took a massive deflection giving Handley no chance .
It was a disappointing ending but on the 90 minutes play it would have been harsh on Westfields to come away with nothing.
